Bornhoffen partnership - How we will work together
A partnership approach is crucial to the sustainability of our practice and assumes shared responsibility for the health and safety of everyone involved in the program. We adopt this approach to provide a supportive environment for all the staff involved, help us manage risk and adopt a developmental focus. We can only succeed when collaborating on these three factors. The physical and emotional safety of all people is always our priority. Please consider your role in the partnership with us as crew members in the experience rather than passengers. The difference is subtle but significant. As crew, you should experience the following: - Decisions related to the safety and welfare of the group members are made together, particularly program changes due to weather, logistics and group needs. Information about the needs of participants is shared ahead of time where appropriate. Facilitators consider the needs of the adult leaders the same as participants – they are adventuring too, challenge by choice and learning applies to them also. Experience and expertise between the adult team are shared to benefit the group. Leadership is shared, and different people can lead with the support of others. Risks, perceived or real – are assessed together, and challenge by choice is briefed and reinforced within the culture of the program. Participants are the best judge of their abilities, and risks are considered and managed together. Services that have a passenger culture can be recognised with the following themes: The experience is done to you, not with you. The activities are seen as entertainment, not learning experiences. The provider is seen as the expert and only decision maker. Rules are followed ahead of experienced-based judgment. The program is rigid and not open to change. Challenge by choice is not discussed or supported. Meaningful responsibility is taken away, and young people are not empowered to make choices and learn from them. Together we will partner on the leadership of the program.
Teachers and supporting adults – Consistent supervision
We require a suitable adult from your organisation to work with each facilitator/ group (please note that in the case of State Schools, this must be a registered teacher). Teachers/ adult leaders have a shared responsibility to assist with safety, group management and decision-making, and supporting participants in applying new learning. Teachers and adult leaders should aim to remain with a single group for the duration of the program. Having consistent staff allows teachers and adult leaders to: Build increased trust, connection and rapport with participants. Observe emerging and consistent leadership behaviours. Develop a consistent and supportive learning environment with their PCYC Facilitator. Create a group environment that is safe and predictable for everyone involved. Your Leadership Development facilitator has a technical skillset and will take the lead with activity-specific information but will need your support. Together we will ensure the following: Participants are kept physically and emotionally safe. Participants are supported to be their best. Participants are allowed to make mistakes and learn from the experience. The learning experiences are linked back to your students’ environments. Participants and staff are given some choice around accepting the challenges offered (challenge by choice). Supervision, group, and behavioural issues are shared. We understand that aspects of the program may stretch some beyond their comfort zone, challenge by choice applies, and adult leaders should feel comfortable swapping out of their group for a particular session (residential services only). This should be assessed case-by-case and discussed with the service supervisor before or during your service. Please be realistic about expedition-based programs, remote locations, and the practicality of swapping leaders mid-service. In these cases, this will need to be considered ahead of time.
Inclusive program design
To ensure your program is inclusive of all participants, we need to understand the level of support required. Please advise us of any participants with a special or higher need. Please consider whether additional support is needed and how best to disperse these students across your program. This may be a smaller group with a modified experience and/or additional support.

-
Is there Wi-Fi?We understand the importance of staying "connected". We offer WIFI to all adult leaders however we ask that young people embrace and connect with nature and Bornhoffen's beautiful surroundings without this.
-
What's provided in the cabins?Just a bunk bed. You'll still need a towel, fitted sheet, pillow, sleeping bag or dunna, along with anything else that may make your visit more comfortable.
-
Can you cater for special diets?Yes, our team of professional caterers can easily cater for most dietery needs.
-
Are the activities safe? While there are some inherent risks with recreating in the outdoors, PCYC Bornhoffen has a strong safety culture with extensive risk management systems across our operations which meet or exceed the Australian Adventure Activity Standards (AAAS). Our programs are led by outdoor professionals who're trained and qualified across several disciplines with extensive experience in adventure-based learning, group management and leadership. When determining whether a program experience is right for you or your child, we encourage you to consider both the risk and benefits of participating or not participating in the experience. Please contact your event organiser if you have further questions or concerns regarding your program.

What is Challenge by Choice?Challenge By Choice is a programming philosophy recognising the importance of personal choice. When we allow choice, we promote agency and options for participants to be involved to the best of their ability. For some, this may mean they're involved fully or partially in the experience. Challenge by choice is supported throughout all programs and to different degrees depending on the type of program and specific activity.

What is Creeking?Creeking is an aquatic experience involving scrambling, wading, and swimming through the deeper parts of the Nerang River, which flows through the Bornhoffen property. It's similar to a low ropes course activity but within a dynamic natural environment. There are significant opportunities for participants to be involved in safety, decision-making, leadership and teamwork as the group journey together.
-
What can I expect when camping out? This depends on each program and campsite. Typically, it involves sleeping in tents and on a soft foam bed roll. Amenities are pretty basic, with compostable toilets. While it may sound unpleasant, sleeping out in the bush and gathering around the campfire are memorable experiences and well worth it.

What is experiential and adventure-based learning?Learning from experience is one of the most fundamental and natural means of learning available to everyone (Beard & Wilson, 2018). Adventure-based learning is a sub-discipline of experiential learning and a key framework that underpins all PCYC Leadership Development (LD) programs. Adventure Based Learning or Adventure Education, noted by Prouty (2007) is a unique framework “defined as direct, active and engaging learning experiences that involve the whole person and have real consequences” (Prouty, 2007). On program this presents as a sequence of challenging experiences that help a young person recognise strengths, engage in reflection, tests their resilience, and provides reward from positive risk-taking like walking a trail, paddling a canoe, or abseiling a cliff. A key element to adventure programming is the concept of stretch-zone experiences, with some suggesting that it is this aspect of adventure-based experiences that promotes learning (Panicucci, 2007).
